Idaho State Police reported a fatal head-on car crash west of Post Falls. A vehicle traveling eastbound lost control and went over the center line. Another vehicle traveling westbound struck the right-hand side of the eastbound vehicle. The driver of the eastbound vehicle was pronounced deceased at the scene of the car crash. The occupants of the southbound vehicle were transported to a nearby medical center for evaluation of injuries. Idaho State Police are still investigating this car crash.
Statistics show that only two percent of car accidents are head-on collisions. However, these types of crashes account for over ten percent of driving fatalities. Due to the increased force sustained by both drivers in a head-on collision, these types of accidents are probably the most dangerous. Here are some tips to help you avoid a head-on car crash.
How to Avoid a Head-on Car Crash
Seatbelt Use
Statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports airbags and seat belt use has reduced the fatality rate of head-on collisions by 61 percent.
When Passing, Use Caution
When driving on a rural road, only pass when it is safe to do so. This can be tricky for many drivers as it is hard to see oncoming traffic until you start to attempt to pass. If in doubt, don’t. Instead, wait for a passing lane.
Always Drive Alert
Never drive tired or distracted. Make sure to always have your eyes and mind on the road when you are driving to avoid an accident. All too often a driver accidentally swerves into oncoming traffic because they are distracted or falling asleep at the wheel.
Be Aware of Lane Markings
It is only lawful to pass on a one-lane road when the line is dashed or a passing lane is present. Passing over a double yellow line or in a passing lane for the opposing flow of traffic is unlawful and could cause a serious accident.
Roadway Conditions
If a roadway appears slick, do not attempt to pass. Doing so may cause the driver to lose control and end in an accident.
