How to Avoid a Car Accident with a Wrong-Way Driver
A report from the National Transportation Safety Board estimated 360 people are killed each year in wrong-way car accidents. About 60 percent of these car crashes involve alcohol, and close to 80 percent occur between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. Here are some tips to avoid a car accident with a wrong-way driver.
- Drive in the middle lane or far-right lane. In the middle lane, you’d hopefully have an option to move left or right to get out of the way of a wrong-way driver. On the other hand, if only two lanes are available, driving in the far-right lane will hopefully help you to avoid a wrong-way driver because they would most likely be driving in the left lane thinking it is the right lane. Give yourself a place to go to avoid any hazards if possible.
- Honk your horn and flash your lights. Sometimes a wrong-way driver might not be familiar with the road. By getting their attention with flashing your headlights and honking, you could avoid a serious head-on collision.
- Pay attention to pavement markings, especially when driving in an unfamiliar area or road. This will help you to avoid being the driver going in the wrong direction.
- Always keep your eyes on the road and scanning what is around you to avoid a crash.
